ANTHROPOLOGY

Anthropos is the common Greek word for a human being, regardless of race or gender. Paul used the word this way as well. When he described the life of Jesus in comparison to the life of Adam, for example, he used the word (often, as in this instance, translated "man") with reference to both Adam and Jesus ("sin entered the world through one man," Rom. 5:12; "the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ," v. 15).

People, especially in their present life and future prospects, were of utmost importance to Paul. As he told the Corinthians, "we endanger ourselves every hour" (1 Cor. 15:30) in the course of a ministry that sought to proclaim the gospel to as wide an audience as possible ("I worked harder than all of them [i.e., the other apostles]," 1 Cor. 15:10). While he placed great value on the importance of people, Paul also regarded them as trapped in a state of rebellion and alienation from God, a result of human sin and divine judgment.
